Teen Counselling in Thornhill & Online Across Ontario

A space to feel understood and figure things out

Being a teenager can feel like living between two worlds. You want more freedom, privacy and control over your life, while still needing support, reassurance and somewhere safe to land. School expectations, friendships, family relationships and uncertainty about the future can make this stage feel overwhelming—for teens and their parents.

At Walk Together Counselling & Wellness Centre, we offer a warm, supportive space where teens can talk openly, explore what matters to them and find ways to manage the challenges they face.

Finding someone they connect with matters

It can be hard for teens to find an adult they feel comfortable opening up to. They may worry about being judged, misunderstood, lectured or told what to do. Some have tried counselling before and felt that the connection simply wasn’t there.

Each of us brings our own personality, interests and way of connecting with teens. Connection might grow through humour, shared interests, thoughtful conversation or a more practical, collaborative approach. We take time to get to know the person behind the concern and make room for their pace, preferences and goals.

Teens don’t need to arrive ready to share everything—or even know what they want to talk about. Building trust is part of the work.

Growing into their own person

Adolescence is a time of exploring identity: Who am I? What do I believe? Where do I belong? Becoming more independent from parents—sometimes called individuation—can bring excitement, uncertainty and tension.

A teen may want to make their own decisions but feel overwhelmed by the responsibility. They may want closeness with their parents while also needing more privacy. Having different opinions, setting boundaries or disappointing someone they love can be difficult.

Counselling offers space to explore these tensions, develop a stronger sense of self and practise expressing needs. We support teens in building independence while maintaining meaningful connections with the people who care about them.

What we can help with

We support teens navigating:

  • Anxiety, worry, perfectionism and OCD

  • Depression, low motivation and feeling disconnected

  • School pressure, academic stress and uncertainty about the future

  • Friendships, bullying, belonging and social confidence

  • Self-esteem, identity and cultural expectations

  • Family conflict, changing relationships and boundaries

  • Big emotions, frustration and difficulty expressing feelings

  • ADHD, autism, sensory needs and the exhaustion of trying to fit in

  • Grief, loss and difficult life experiences

  • Vaping, nicotine, alcohol or cannabis use, and concerns about gaming, gambling, social media or other behaviours that feel difficult to control

When coping becomes hard to control

Some teens turn to vaping, substances, gaming or social media to manage stress, connect with peers or get relief from difficult feelings. What starts as experimentation or a way to cope can sometimes begin to affect sleep, school, relationships and everyday life.

We offer a nonjudgmental space to explore what these behaviours provide, their impact and how the teen feels about making changes. Together, we work toward healthier ways of coping and seek additional specialized support when needed.

Support that makes room for the whole person

We work collaboratively with teens to understand what is happening in their lives and what they would like to change. Sessions may include exploring emotions, making sense of relationship patterns, practising communication or developing practical ways to handle stressful situations.

Our approach is neurodiversity-affirming. We consider each teen’s strengths, needs and environment, including where greater understanding or accommodation may help.

Where do parents fit in?

Parents often seek counselling because they see their teen struggling and want to help, but aren’t sure how. We make room for parents’ concerns while respecting the teen’s developing independence and need for privacy.

At the beginning, we explain confidentiality, its limits and how information may be shared. When appropriate, and with attention to consent and safety, parent involvement can help strengthen communication and bring support into everyday family life.
