Individual Counselling

You may look like you are managing on the outside, while inside you feel anxious, overwhelmed, stuck, disconnected, or exhausted from holding everything together.

Individual counselling offers a space where you do not have to minimize what you are feeling or figure everything out on your own. Therapy can help you better understand yourself, make sense of patterns that keep repeating, and build practical tools for coping, healing, and moving forward.

At Walk Together Counselling & Wellness Centre, we provide individual counselling for adults in person in Thornhill and online across Ontario. Our approach is warm, collaborative, trauma-informed, and neurodiversity-affirming.

How Individual Counselling Can Help

People come to individual therapy for many different reasons. You may be going through a difficult life transition, struggling in your relationships, feeling consumed by worry, or noticing that old coping strategies are no longer working.

Individual counselling can support you with:

  • Anxiety, worry, and overthinking

  • OCD, intrusive thoughts, and compulsive behaviours

  • Depression, low mood, or loss of motivation

  • Stress, burnout, and emotional exhaustion

  • ADHD, autism, AuDHD, giftedness, and neurodivergent experiences

  • Autistic burnout, masking, and sensory overwhelm

  • Emotion regulation and intense feelings

  • Relationship patterns and communication challenges

  • Boundaries, people-pleasing, and self-advocacy

  • Low self-esteem, shame, or self-criticism

  • Grief, loss, and life transitions

  • Trauma and painful past experiences

  • Parenting stress and family-related challenges

Therapy is not only about reducing symptoms. It is also about understanding what your emotions are trying to tell you, learning how to respond to yourself with more compassion, and creating a life that feels more aligned with your needs and values.

A Neurodiversity-Affirming Therapy Space

One of the things that makes our practice unique is our focus on neurodiversity-affirming counselling.

Many neurodivergent adults have spent years feeling misunderstood, overwhelmed, or pressured to function in ways that do not fit them. You may have learned to mask, push through exhaustion, ignore sensory needs, or blame yourself for struggling with things that seem easier for other people.

We support adults with ADHD, autism, AuDHD, giftedness, twice-exceptionality, sensory sensitivities, executive functioning challenges, emotional intensity, and autistic burnout. We also work with people who are beginning to wonder whether neurodivergence may be part of their experience.

Our goal is not to make you more “normal.” Instead, we help you better understand your brain, your nervous system, your strengths, your needs, and the environments that support or drain you. Therapy can help reduce shame, build self-understanding, and support you in creating more sustainable ways of living.

What Makes Our Approach Unique

At Walk Together Counselling & Wellness Centre, we believe therapy should be both compassionate and practical. We do not use a one-size-fits-all approach. Instead, we take time to understand who you are, what you have been carrying, and what kind of support would be most helpful for you.

Our work is grounded in several core values:

We are trauma-informed.
We consider how past experiences, relationships, stress, and nervous system responses may be shaping how you feel and cope today.

We are attachment-based.
We look at how relationships, family patterns, and early experiences may influence your sense of self, your boundaries, and the way you connect with others.

We are neurodiversity-affirming.
We do not pathologize differences in communication, sensory needs, emotional processing, attention, or energy. We work with your brain, not against it.

We are collaborative and direct.
Therapy is a shared process. We listen deeply, but we also help you notice patterns, build insight, and practice new ways of responding.

We care about real-life change.
Insight matters, but so do tools. Depending on your goals, therapy may include coping strategies, communication skills, exposure work, values-based action, boundary-setting, or emotional regulation skills.

Our Approach to Individual Therapy

Our approach is warm, gentle, collaborative, and direct. We aim to create a space where you feel safe enough to be honest, supported enough to explore difficult emotions, and empowered enough to make meaningful changes.

In therapy, we may explore questions such as:

  • Why do I keep reacting this way?

  • What patterns are showing up in my relationships?

  • How do I manage anxiety or intrusive thoughts without letting them control my life?

  • What do I need in order to feel more grounded?

  • How do I set boundaries without guilt?

  • How do I stop masking and begin living more authentically?

  • What parts of myself have I learned to hide, criticize, or disconnect from?

  • How can I move toward the life I want, even when things feel hard?

We move at your pace. Some sessions may focus on practical strategies and problem-solving. Others may focus on slowing down, processing emotions, understanding patterns, or making sense of past experiences.

Therapy Modalities We Use

We use evidence-based and relational therapy approaches depending on your needs, goals, and preferences. These may include:

Cognitive Behavioural Therapy
CBT can help you identify patterns in thoughts, feelings, and behaviours, and learn more helpful ways to respond to anxiety, stress, depression, and self-criticism.

Acceptance and Commitment Therapy
ACT helps you relate differently to difficult thoughts and emotions while moving toward your values and what matters most to you.

Exposure and Response Prevention
ERP is a highly effective approach for OCD, intrusive thoughts, anxiety, and avoidance. It helps you gradually face fears while reducing compulsions and reassurance-seeking.

Dialectical Behaviour Therapy Skills
DBT skills can support emotional regulation, distress tolerance, mindfulness, and relationship effectiveness.

Emotionally Focused Therapy
EFT helps explore emotional patterns, attachment needs, and relationship dynamics that may be affecting your sense of safety and connection.

Narrative Therapy
Narrative Therapy helps you separate yourself from the problem, explore the stories that have shaped your identity, and reconnect with your strengths and values.

Trauma-Informed Therapy
Trauma-informed therapy pays attention to safety, choice, nervous system responses, and the ways past experiences may continue to affect the present.

Neurodiversity-Affirming Therapy
This approach supports ADHD, autism, AuDHD, giftedness, sensory needs, executive functioning, masking, burnout, and emotional regulation without treating neurodivergence as something that needs to be fixed.

What to Expect in Individual Counselling

In the first few sessions, we will spend time getting to know you and understanding what brings you to therapy. You do not need to have everything figured out before starting.

We may talk about your current concerns, relationships, family history, coping strategies, strengths, stressors, and goals for therapy. When helpful, we may also use assessment tools or questionnaires to better understand what you are experiencing.

Together, we will create a direction for therapy that fits your needs. Depending on your goals, sessions may include:

  • Building coping tools for anxiety, stress, or emotional overwhelm

  • Understanding and changing unhelpful patterns

  • Practicing boundaries and communication

  • Working with intrusive thoughts or compulsions

  • Exploring relationship and attachment patterns

  • Supporting executive functioning and daily routines

  • Reducing shame and self-criticism

  • Processing grief, trauma, or painful experiences

  • Identifying your values and taking meaningful steps forward

Therapy is collaborative. We will check in along the way about what feels helpful, what feels stuck, and whether our work is moving in the direction you want.
